Data Centre Decommissioning, UK

DSE2ME were recently appointed to perform data centre decommissioning services to two data centres within the UK. Due to the exit of a large scale outsourcing contract, Birmingham City Council have been undergoing an Application Platform Modernisation programme. This represents an opportunity to refresh the infrastructure estate, develop greater ‘cloud’ capability and make £M’s savings.

Birmingham City Council Data centre decommissioning

Following on from the infrastructure, networks and application teams who migrated all of the existing services onto new or cloud based platforms whilst maintaining key services.

Our job was to decommission two of the largest Data Centres in the organisation. The two sites, located in Birmingham and Kent, housed approximately 300 servers and storage devices hosting key applications that serve residents of Birmingham. Whilst some of the assets could be repurposed in a newly acquired Data Centre, much of the hardware was either ‘end of life’ or nearing the end of support contracts. This was all sent for secure asset disposal by an approved contractor.
